New award in memory of much-loved optometrist

A new award recognising early career excellence in optometry has been launched by Specsavers.
The award for pre-registration and newly qualified optometrists working at Specsavers is in memory of Judy Lea, a much-loved educator and mentor who died earlier this year.
‘Judy’s work shaped the careers of countless optometrists,’ says Sarah Joyce, director of optometry at Specsavers. ‘Her legacy lives on through the many professionals she inspired through her work as a Specsavers Partner, as Head of Optometry Development and also her roles at the College of Optometrists.
‘The Judy Lea Award for Early Career Excellence recognises pre-reg and newly qualified optometrists – within two years of qualification – who are already making a meaningful impact.
‘The impact might be community involvement, personal development, or supporting others in optics. It reflects the values Judy that championed throughout her life.’
Judy’s son, Sam Lea, will be on the judging panel with the winner announced at the Specsavers Professional Advancement Conference on Sunday 14 September.
