Myopia under the microscope in new BCLA webinar

7pm to 8pm on Wednesday, 16 July.

The BCLA will give eye care professionals an overview of the latest research into myopia management – with hundreds of papers to be summarised in a one-hour webinar.

Myopia and its increasing prevalence has been acknowledged as a serious health concern by the World Health Organisation. However, despite an increasing volume of research on the topic and new products showing evidence of the efficacy of myopia management, it can take a while for this to impact clinical practice.

This webinar, to be presented by Prof James Wolffsohn and Jonathan Cohen, will summarise changes in attitudes towards and practice of myopia management since 2015 from survey data collected globally every couple of years.

Brad Parkes, chief executive of the BCLA, said: “Many practitioners have engaged with myopia management, but not all. There are a range of easy-to-apply options that can significantly reduce a patient’s risk of future myopia-related ocular pathology.

“Our latest webinar will allow practitioners to consider the options available to them for myopia management and to benchmark their current practice against those of their peers, while understanding the treatments and strategies being applied in the real world.”

Prof James Wolffsohn is Dean of Optometry and Audiology at Aston University in Birmingham. His main research areas are the development and evaluation of ophthalmic instrumentation, myopia management, contact lenses, intraocular lenses, presbyopia and the tear film. He is the academic Chair of the BCLA, a Director of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface society (TFOS) and the Chief Scientific Officer of the International Myopia Institute (IMI).

Jonathan Cohen is the Clinical Director of Zacks Eye Clinic in Central London. He is an Independent Prescribing optometrist with expertise in paediatrics, myopia management, orthokeratology and medical contact lenses and has received multiple awards for his clinical work, including optometrist of the year.

The CooperVision-sponsored webinar, worth one CPD point and open to all, will be held from 7pm to 8pm on Wednesday, 16 July.
