New £3m surgical centre opens in Welwyn Garden City

A state-of-the-art eye clinic and surgical centre has opened in Welwyn Garden City.

Newmedica Welwyn Garden City, located at Shire Park, will provide high-quality NHS and private treatments, including cataract surgery, glaucoma procedures, YAG laser treatments, and medical retina services. The clinic also offers Oculoplastic surgery, Wet AMD and general ophthalmology treatments to its private patients.

The centre represents a £3million investment in the local healthcare infrastructure and is expected to reduce wait times for patients needing eye surgery.

Huma Stone, Operations Director at Newmedica Welwyn Garden City, said: ‘We are committed to ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care with minimal wait times. Our new surgical centre will make a real difference to people in the community, giving them access to life-changing treatments more quickly and efficiently.

‘Our clinic also offers free parking right outside, making it convenient and accessible for all of our patients.’

She co-owns Newmedica Welwyn Garden City alongside three other highly experienced consultant ophthalmologists – Mr James Bacon, Miss Fariha Shafi, and Mr Michael Toma.

Together with a team of dedicated professionals, the clinic has launched with 12 staff members with plans for further recruitment as patient demand grows. Newmedica Welwyn Garden City is also exploring opportunities to provide apprenticeships and training placements for future healthcare professionals, with a focus on working closely with local universities and colleges.

Newmedica’s NHS patients benefit from a superior lens as standard, which helps reduce the likelihood of any further treatment being required. As well as leading to better patient outcomes, the use of this lens by Newmedica clinics nationwide has saved the NHS an estimated £4.5million since 2017.

Patients opting to go private have more lens choice, including multifocal lenses which can see them no longer needing reading glasses or toric lenses, to help with astigmatism.
