AOP launches research into key reforms proposed for primary eye care services in Wales
The Welsh Government put forward proposals for major reforms of primary eye care services
The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is launching a research survey to gather insight around how proposed reforms to primary eye care services may impact AOP members and patients in Wales.
Speaking about the importance of the research, Adam Sampson, AOP Chief Executive, said: “The proposals outlined by the Welsh Government will fundamentally change the way that primary eye care services are delivered in a bid to address hospital waiting times and improve eye healthcare.
“While there are some excellent proposals, including higher remuneration for optometric clinical services, we do have some serious concerns over reforms that potentially prevent access to eye healthcare from the most vulnerable patients, and negatively impact those practising in Wales.
“It is therefore vitally important that our members in Wales engage on the core issues, particularly those we’ve identified as carrying risk, and have their say in influencing the reforms.”
During the consultation, the AOP will be listening and advocating for the views of members in Wales as well as those members who practise on the England and Wales border. This will include providing support around some of the more complex regulatory changes in the proposals and what they may mean for members practising in Wales.
Members will receive a unique link to take part in the AOP’s survey on the consultation via email on 19 May.
In addition to the member survey, the AOP will be engaging with Welsh members at an in-person, event, Focus group on the primary care ophthalmic services consultation in Wales, taking place on 5 June in Swansea.
There will also be an opportunity for members to share their views on specific topics over the coming weeks via the AOP’s community forums.
The AOP will respond to the proposals with and on behalf of members in Wales by the closing date of 19 June 2023. Individual submissions to the consultation can also be made online.
To explain more about the consultation, including the AOP’s current view and the possible outcomes, the AOP have produced FAQs.
