SMC Updates Sector on its Charity Awards 

Bursary Awards

This week, the Charity trustees agreed to award 21 bursaries totalling almost £19,000. These bursaries are a vital financial cushion for students, particularly in the current economic climate, and are largely used to help with travel and equipment costs.

One of the bursary recipients, Danielle Brodie, sent a photo of her practicing using optical equipment at Plymouth University. We wish her the best of luck in her studies

Professional Development Awards

Trustees agreed to award a Professional Development award to ophthalmologist Dr Akshay Narayan. Dr Narayan will use the award to attend the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) conference in Athens next weekend

Latest Grants given

Since 1st April 2024, the trustees have awarded grants to twenty five charities and organisations totaling £80,000. The grants cover a variety of purposes, including accessibility, art & culture, information & support, employment, sports, and education. Several grants have also been awarded to eye health projects in remote communities outside the UK
