Specsavers opens 1000th practice
SPECSAVERS co-founder Dame Mary Perkins has helped opened its 1000th UK and Irish practice – 40 years after opening the doors to the first Specsavers practice.
Dame Mary was joined by rugby legend and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ugo Monye and the Mayor of Harpenden, Councillor Fiona Gaskell, for the opening of the Harpenden practice in the heart of the high street. It features four optical testing rooms and a dual audiology room, with the team also offering optical coherence tomography (OCT) as part of a £350,000 investment in the Hertfordshire practice.
‘Creating this practice has been such a fulfilling journey,’ says director Lewis Carroll. ‘Having the pleasure to watch residents go by while we added our touches to the practice has given me a real sense of what the town is all about.
‘Harpenden is a unique place filled with amazing people, success, and history. Our mission is to add to the great value and quality in Harpenden, and this goes past providing optical and audiological care.’
Dame Mary says: ‘If you had told me when we opened our first practice back in 1984 that we would be opening our 1000th practice 40 years later, I wouldn’t have believed it. Our aim has always been to provide high-quality and affordable eye and hearing care to all, and I’m pleased that this new practice, run by experienced joint venture partners, will make our services accessible to even more people.’
Audiology director Vivek Joshi adds: ‘I have spent over 25 years in audiology after graduating in India. Since then, I have worked in Dubai, Bahrain, and the UK, where I worked for the NHS for 20 years.
‘Working in Lister Hospital in Stevenage for all those years gave me a fist-hand look into the lives of the Hertfordshire residents.
‘As the latest audiology professional in Harpenden, I can focus my efforts to the Harpenden residents, ensuring that they get the highest standard of audiological care.’
