Purpose-built Macclesfield eye clinic welcomes its first NHS patients this month

Thousands of residents across Cheshire East with sight-stealing conditions can now access local care

Residents across Cheshire will benefit from a community eye health centre in Macclesfield, which is now accepting NHS patients with a range of conditions that impair vision and limit quality of life.

The SpaMedica clinic – based at Tytherington Business Park – could support more than 13,000 people living with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts and glaucoma in the Cheshire East area.

Patients referred to SpaMedica Macclesfield with cataracts will receive expert vision assessments within the Fernbank House building, followed by surgery in a dedicated, state-of-the-art onsite theatre suite such as Sale or Newcastle-Under-Lyme. A free door‑to‑door transport service is also available for cataract patients, making travel to and from appointments quick and convenient for all.

For those with AMD – which affects central vision and is a leading cause of blindness in the UK – testing, monitoring and treatments are delivered under one roof without delay. Currently, 100% of people referred into the service are offered a first appointment within 14 days.

The latest eye treatment service to launch at the Macclesfield centre will also support local residents diagnosed with glaucoma.

SpaMedica’s Macclesfield clinic supports the NHS’s 10-year blueprint to deliver care in community settings. Centre manager Kerry Moseley explains: “Our purpose-built facility in Macclesfield will make a significant difference to people living with sight loss in the region. This is hugely important, given that in Cheshire East, rates of both cataracts and AMD are estimated to rise by nearly 30% by 2032, with glaucoma cases expected to increase by 20%.
