New kit transforms Slit Lamp into Dry Eye Assessment Device

Essilor Instruments launches two new digital slit lamp adapters designed to perform a complete dry eye assessment and eye photography.

The DSLC200 and the DEM100 can be used on any slit lamp to transform it into a comprehensive, industry recognised dry eye assessment in an easy, and user-friendly way, for the ECP and the patient.

The DEM100 takes a complete tear film automated digital analysis with multiple tests, while the DSLC200 slit lamp imaging system provides high quality images and videos of the eye.

Paul Cumber, Essilor Instruments Director said: “The need for dry eye assessment and treatment has been recognised by practices for many years now, allowing them to provide an additional service and differentiate their businesses.

“So, whether an ECP is starting up a dry eye service in practice, or simply wishing to adopt a more patient engaged approach to existing services, the DSLC200 and the DEM100 represent a great opportunity for practitioners to be able to provide an industry recognised dry eye assessments for a relatively small outlay, and without increasing the device footprint in practice.

“The space saving kit allows the practice entry into the dry eye market with quantitative and qualitative assessments, and the ability to show the patients what the problems are rather than just telling them.

“Both devices take less than five minutes to set up and can be easily installed in a spare examination room to inexpensively create a dry eye clinic and an additional revenue stream. Furthermore, it can be fitted to a slit lamp in the primary examination room to allow the ECP the flexibility to provide dry eye services from the one location.”

DSLC200

The DSLC200 has a 3.2 MP camera with 1/1.8-inch sensor to produce high-quality optical images. The optical system has an adjustable focus distance to be set accordingly and the module can be mounted on most slit lamps.

The body of the DSCL200 fits in-between the eyepieces and the slit lamp optics mounting of the slit lamp. It means it always leaves both eyepieces free for binocular viewing by the ECP just as with any normal slit lamp. The beam splitter allows the digital image to be seen the same as the eyepieces, for easy video and image capture.

It also provides an accurate system for recording the appearance of the tissue.

DEM100

The DEM100 software guides the ECP through the dry eye examination including Meibography of the glands through illumination of the eyelid with infrared light to diagnose any meibomian gland drop out which would lead to tear dysfunction.

The 3D Meibography imaging system provides strong evidence to support the choice of a specific therapy and helps the patient to understand why a certain therapy is being recommended.

Auto interferometry software automatically evaluates the quantity and quality of the lipid component of the tear film. The device highlights the lipid layer and the software objectively evaluates Lipid Layer Thickness (LLT).

The height of the tear meniscus that is observed on the eyelid margins provides useful information on the tear volume. The tear meniscus can be examined considering its height, regularity and shape.

The device allows the ECP to evaluate blink quality and tear film stability and regularity, using non-invasive break up time measurement (NIBUT).

There is also a unique section dedicated to the Evaporative Dry Eye including all exams results related to this extremely widespread pathology.
