HOYA Vision Care UK Celebrates Completion of £50,000 Fundraising Project to Build New Community Eye Care Centre in India in Partnership with Orbis UK

HOYA Lens UK is proud to announce the successful completion of a three-year fundraising initiative, raising an incredible £50,000 to support the construction of a new community eye care centre in India, in partnership with international eye care charity, Orbis.

This pioneering community health care centre, also known as a Green Vision Centre (GVC), will further the charity’s mission to strengthen eye care services in rural India, and reflects HOYA’s continued commitment to advancing global eye health and tackling avoidable sight loss through sustainable, community-led initiatives.

India has the highest number of people living with blindness and vision impairment in the world. In many areas, travelling to the nearest hospital can mean a journey of hundreds of miles, often across difficult terrain. Orbis Green Vision Centres bring essential eye screenings and primary care closer to underserved communities.

The new Tura Green Vision Centre welcomed its first patients last month, following an inauguration ceremony attended by Orbis India delegates, local dignitaries and beneficiaries.’

Providing access to eye care services for an estimated 90,000 adults and children within India’s Northeastern state of Meghalaya, the Green Vision Centre is equipped with solar panels, energy-efficient appliances and telemedicine software, making it both environmentally sustainable and supported by advanced technology

“We extend our heartfelt thanks for HOYA’s incredible fundraising efforts over the past three years in support of building a new Green Vision Centre in India. HOYA’s commitment will help to bring vital eye care services to a previously underserved area, transforming lives through the gift of sight.” – Kate Gannon, Director of Programme Fundraising, Orbis UK

A True HOYA Team Effort

Over three years, colleagues from HOYA Lens UK have pulled together to complete a range of creative fundraising activities to smash their £50,000 target. Highlights included a ‘Journey for Vision’, where 80 staff members collectively walked 5,000 miles, the symbolic distance from Wrexham to India, in the space of just 19 days.

An epic hike up Mount Snowdon added more for the cause, whilst the legendary London Marathon and gruelling Tough Mudder events saw colleagues from HOYA’s Sales, Production and Support teams pushing their own limits of endurance.

Contributions from HOYA’s MiYOSMART lens sales and contactless donation terminals further boosted the total, helping to reach the £50,000 target.

HOYA Lens UK’s Managing Director, Martin Batho commented: “I’m hugely proud of what the whole team has achieved. The Orbis Green Vision Centre is a fantastic project and one that will leave a lasting legacy, bringing vital sight care services to many thousands of people over the years and decades come.”
