Grand opening for Nottingham sight-saving clinic
The Sherriff of Nottingham was among the guests attending the grand opening of a new sight-saving eye clinic in the city.
Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Shuguftah Quddoos, highlighted the importance of eye health when she joined other visitors at the clinic in Riverside Business Park to officially welcome Newmedica Nottingham’s team of sight specialists. Also at the grand opening was Newmedica managing director Rebecca Lythe.
Newmedica Nottingham initially opened its doors at the end of July when it began seeing patients with a range of eye conditions, including cataracts and glaucoma. In the past two months it has already treated more than 100 people.
The grand opening enabled Councillor Quddoos and the other visitors to take a look at the clinic’s state-of-the-art facilities.
She said: “I am delighted to be able to officially open this new healthcare provider in the city. It’s fantastic that they’ve already been able to help so many people in the local area with their sight problems. It’s also fantastic to hear that the clinic is set to create up to 20 new jobs. I wish them every success for their future.”
With the pandemic causing a backlog of surgery for eye operations and other procedures, Newmedica is focused on working in partnership with the NHS to help drive down waiting times so that more patients receive high-quality eye care as quickly as possible.
In the future, Newmedica Nottingham will offer its expertise and hospital-grade facilities to help train new NHS surgeons, ensuring the continuation of high-quality care. It also intends to expand the team, creating more local employment opportunities later this year.
Karan Morjaria, Operations Director at the clinic, said: “Eye health is incredibly important and, as with any medical condition, the more quickly something is treated, the better the outcome is likely to be.
“We want the process of referral, treatment and aftercare to be as smooth as possible and to offer a truly personalised service that is uniquely tailored for every individual who comes through our doors.”
Alongside Karan, Newmedica Nottingham is owned and run by a leading team of leading consultant ophthalmologists – Imran Jawaid, Veerabahu Senthil Maharajan, Aashish Mokashi, and Richard Stead.
Imran said: “Being a partner means that my colleagues and I were able to guide the creation of this new service, from hiring and training the clinical team to designing the best possible processes. We’ve created what I believe is an exceptional service, designed specifically for the needs of our community, and all to ensure patients receive the best personalised care possible.”
Other treatments at Newmedica Nottingham include YAG laser, which is used in instances of cataract surgery complications, and SLT laser, which reduces eye pressure associated with glaucoma.
