GOC team head to vision care for homeless people
The GOC familiarisation team visited Birmingham’s Vision Care for Homeless People clinic to learn more about the charity’s work and were welcomed by Elaine Styles, Chair of the VCHP Trustees –
“I had thought that the GOC team would all be optically-based but they came from a wide variety of backgrounds. It was great for us to inform them how valuable optometric care can be for some of the most vulnerable people in our society. We showed them how it can be delivered in a professional and caring manner, in an environment that people experiencing homelessness feel comfortable in,” she said.
Philipsia Greenway, GOC Director of Change (pictured second right), said it had been a rewarding experience to see first-hand the optical services provided for homeless people within a community setting –
“Listening to the stories of both staff, volunteers, and those in receipt of eye care services have certainly highlighted not only the great work being done to provide eyecare to this highly vulnerable group, but also some of the challenges being faced due to the ever-changing wider healthcare environment.
“Thank you, Vision Care for Homeless People (Birmingham), for allowing us the opportunity to experience what you do,” said Philipsia.
