Call for Expert Myopia authors at BCLA

BCLA announces plan for global consensus report on “presbyopia and its management” and issues call for expert authors

A new BCLA global consensus report will deliver evidence-based guidance to BCLA members and the wider profession on all aspects of presbyopia and its management to allow for best patient care.

Building on the first issue (published in April 2021), BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia will be published in the January 2024 edition of the BCLA journal ‘Contact Lens and Anterior Eye’ (CLAE) and will feature work from panels of globally respected experts.

Executive Co-Chair of BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia, Dr Shehzad Naroo (Editor-in Chief, Contact Lens and Anterior Eye) said “The previous BCLA CLEAR issue in CLAE on the topic of contact lenses has already shown to be a huge resource for everyone involved in the field of contact lenses. We expect the presbyopia issue in CLAE to be the benchmark in the field of presbyopia.”

BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia will set the standard to which researchers and eyecare professionals will refer for the latest information in the field and will also highlight opportunities for future research.

Executive Co-Chair of CLEAR Presbyopia, Professor James Wolffsohn, said “I am delighted the BCLA, as a long established, multidisciplinary eye care organisation, has supported this initiative to review the academic literature on presbyopia.

“The work will involve the top experts in the field and will allow us to draw conclusions and to form a global consensus to support clinicians with what information is supported by evidence, researchers as to the gaps in current knowledge and to guide industry in what still needs to be achieved.”

BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia will feature eight overview papers, each compiled by a panel chaired by internationally renowned experts.  The topic areas are:

  1. Diagnosis and classification
  2. Mechanism and optics
  3. Epidemiology and Impact
  4. Evaluation and diagnosis
  5. Management with Spectacles and Contact Lenses
  6. Management with Corneal Techniques
  7. Management with Scleral Techniques
  8. Management with Intraocular Lenses

If you have expertise in any of the subject areas listed above and would like to be considered as a co-author, please download the application form (https://bcla.wufoo.com/forms/bcla-clear-presbyopia-expression-of-interest/) and complete and return by 30th September 2022.

Executive Co-Chair of CLEAR Presbyopia, Professor Philip Morgan from the University of Manchester, said: “I look forward to working with the BCLA and with colleagues from around the world to present this timely evidence-based summary on the current state of presbyopia research and practice.

“This special issue of the journal will provide an excellent resource for the CLAE readership and will help direct future research efforts to both optimise products and improve patient care.”
