New summary papers have been published outlining the findings of a global consensus report delivering evidence-based guidance to BCLA members and the wider profession on all aspects of presbyopia and its management to allow for best patient care.

The full BCLA CLEARTM Presbyopia report was published in the BCLA journal ‘Contact Lens and Anterior Eye’ (CLAE) between April and July 2024 and features work from panels of globally respected experts.

A summary report has now also been published which highlights key points taken from the eight papers and presents them in an easily accessible format.

Lynn White, project executive for BCLA CLEARTM Presbyopia, said: “This practical guide identifies the areas of interest within the papers including a new global consensus definition of presbyopia, an overview of epidemiology and diagnosis, management techniques and what to expect in the future.

“The work has involved the top experts in the field and allows us to support clinicians with what information is supported by evidence, help researchers to identify gaps in current knowledge and to guide industry on what still needs to be achieved.”

The research follows the success of the first BCLA CLEARTM papers on the topic of contact lenses and has quickly become the benchmark for professionals working in the field of presbyopia.

Executive Co-Chair of BCLA CLEARTM Presbyopia, Professor Philip Morgan from the University of Manchester, said: “Working with colleagues from around the world to present this timely evidence-based summary on the current state of presbyopia research and practice has been an incredibly rewarding experience and the summary papers ensure that work will now be seen by an even wider audience.

“This work will help direct future research efforts to both optimise products and improve patient care.”
