BCLA journal named one of the world’s leading ophthalmology titles

Impact factor rise sees BCLA journal named one of the world’s leading ophthalmology titles

The official journal of the BCLA has been given a new Impact Factor of 4.1 – making it one of the world’s leading authorities in the field of eye care. The ranking puts Contact Lens and Anterior Eye firmly in the upper quartile in the JCR category of ‘Ophthalmology’. In fact, the latest impact factor for 2023 ranks CLAE 10th out of 95 ranked journals.

Shehzad Naroo, editor-in-chief of CLAE, said: “We have been in the second quartile for a few years and have now finally made it into the top quartile. This is a fantastic achievement for a sub-specialty journal such as CLAE.

“It’s been a huge effort from the whole team, and I would like to publicly say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us achieve this, especially our team of associate editors (Dr Robin Chalmers, Prof Pauline Cho, Prof Eric Papas and Prof Stephen Vincent) and to Prof James Wolffsohn and Prof Phil Morgan. James and Phil were co-leads on the BCLA CLEAR™ themed issue in 2021, and those papers have played a big part in this rise.”

The journal impact factors have been released by Clarivate Analytics. They are released annually as part of the Web of Science Journal Citation Reports. Only listed journals receive an impact factor. The impact factor is an indication of how much the papers in a journal are cited by other papers and is an indication of the relevance of a paper.

BCLA chief executive Luke Stevens-Burt said: “These journals represent the ophthalmic sub speciality of medicine and fields allied to medicine. CLAE is a further sub-speciality since we do not accept all ophthalmic papers. We limit our submissions to papers related to contact lenses or anterior eye topics that are relevant to contact lens work.

“Therefore, for CLAE to be classed in the first quartile of this group of journals is a testament to the team behind it. CLAE is clearly punching well above its weight.

“Researchers have a wide range of choice of peer reviewed journals to choose from but if they want to get their work to be published in the best contact lens journal in the world then they have to look at submitting to CLAE.”

CLAE is a research-based journal covering all aspects of contact lens theory and practice, including original articles on invention and innovations as well as the regular features of clinical trials, novel case reports, literary reviews and editorials.

It is available via standalone subscription or included with BCLA membership which can be accessed by logging into your BCLA account at www.bcla.org.uk.
