BCLA announces plan for global consensus report on astigmatism and issues call for expert authors
A new BCLA global consensus report will deliver evidence-based guidance to eye care professionals on all aspects of astigmatism and its management to allow for best patient care.
Building on the success of the inaugural BCLA CLEAR™ and a follow-up dedicated to presbyopia, the next edition focusing on astigmatism will be published in the early part of 2027 of the BCLA journal ‘Contact Lens and Anterior Eye’ (CLAE) and will feature collated evidence from panels of globally respected experts.
Executive Co-Chair of BCLA CLEAR™ Astigmatism, Professor Shehzad Naroo, said “The previous two BCLA CLEAR™ issues have proven to be a huge resource for everyone involved in the fields of contact lenses and presbyopia. We expect the next BCLA CLEAR™ issue in CLAE to be the benchmark in the field of astigmatism.”
BCLA CLEAR™ Astigmatism will set the standard to which researchers and eyecare professionals will refer for the latest evidence in the field and will also highlight opportunities for future research.
Executive Co-Chair of BCLA CLEAR™ Astigmatism, Professor James Wolffsohn, from Aston University, said “I am delighted the BCLA, as a long-established, multidisciplinary eye care organisation, has supported this initiative to review the academic literature on astigmatism.
“The work will involve the top experts in the field and will allow us to draw conclusions and to form a global consensus to support clinicians with what information is supported by evidence, researchers as to the gaps in current knowledge and to guide industry in what still needs to be achieved.”
BCLA CLEAR™ Astigmatism will feature six overview papers, each compiled by a panel chaired by internationally renowned experts. The topics areas are:
- Diagnosis and classification (authors by invitation only)
- Ocular anatomy, optics and epidemiology of astigmatism
- Evaluation and diagnosis of astigmatism
- Correction of astigmatism with contact lenses and spectacles
- Surgical correction of astigmatism – lens and corneal options
- Irregular astigmatism
Executive Co-Chair of BCLA CLEAR™ Astigmatism, Professor Philip Morgan from the University of Manchester, said “I look forward to working with the BCLA and with colleagues from around the world to present this evidence-based and timely summary on the current knowledge in the field of astigmatism research and practice.
“This special issue of the journal will provide an excellent resource for the CLAE readership and help direct future research efforts to both optimise products and improve patient care.”
