ABDO achieves carbon neutrality for the second year running as part of its SEE Campaign #thinkinggreen
The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) has successfully achieved carbon neutrality for 2022, alongside a significant reduction in emissions in a number of areas.
ABDO sustainability lead Antonia Chitty says, “Carbon footprinting ABDO’s work is a significant achievement and I want to thank the staff who have worked on this on top of their existing workloads. It is exciting to know that the offsets mean that ABDO has compensated for its emissions.”
ABDO staff worked together to provide information on the Association’s activities for 2022, which were then analysed to calculate emissions of greenhouse gases. In accordance with BSI PAS 2060, this included:
• water supply
• fuels burned
• electricity purchased
• waste generated
• business travel
• employees’ commuting
• working from home emissions
Antonia adds, “The ABDO team has decreased electricity, gas and water consumption. All waste is now recycled. Business travel and commuting emissions have increased as 2022 saw an increase in activity after the pandemic halted much of the Association’s travel. We will be looking at ways to stay on top of this in years to come, and have already made the EV and Cycle to Work schemes available to staff.”
The Association’s emissions have been offset using the Larimar Wind Farm Project from Dominican Republic by the Verra registry.
The next steps for the Association are to assess upcoming activities and build on its strategy to reduce emissions further while still allowing the organisation to continue its work towards its purpose, to support and represent its members, to promote awareness of their roles, to enable their professional development and to advance the profession.
