Transport service for cataract patients clocks up 10,000 journeys

NHS cataract patients who would have struggled to attend appointments have been able to do so through a free taxi service provided by ophthalmology provider Newmedica.
Newmedica launched the service in April 2024, which has clocked up 10,000 journeys within 12 months. It operates across more than 30 locations through private taxi providers, who typically collect and drop off patients at their home individually.
June Schofield was one NHS patient who has used the free transport service. After being offered a choice of providers, she opted for Newmedica Manchester West, where she underwent successful cataract surgery.
‘Newmedica even covered the cost of my travel to and from the clinic, as my husband was working and couldn’t take me, which was a huge help and was one less thing for me to have to think about,’ she says.
Nicola Lewis, Partnership and Operations Director at Newmedica, says: ‘For NHS patients, such as June’s, who have trouble attending their appointment or surgery, we are able to provide complimentary transportation.
‘We take pride in offering this service to patients who require it, ensuring they have access to the treatment they need. Newmedica goes the extra mile for our patients.’
She adds: ‘To support usage, we’ve communicated it regularly to our referrers and patients. The service is part of Newmedica’s “Power of Personal” ethos that ensures that every patient feels supported and their individual needs are understood.’
This ethos also encompasses free on-site parking, clear navigation signage, and a calming environment at Newmedica’s modern and accessible surgical centres for NHS and private patients.
‘We’ll hold the hand of patients, play their chosen music in theatre and allow time for meaningful conversations with their consultant,’ explains Ms Lewis.
All of Newmedica’s services offer 24 hours a day, seven days a week telephone support to patients. ‘This support is managed by local teams, including clinicians who can advise on the next steps, including offering follow up appointments at our clinics,’ says Ms Lewis.
‘We call our patients 24 hours post operatively to ensure they’re recovering from their procedure. If there are any concerns, patients are automatically booked into their local clinic to be seen by a clinician.’
