Optometrists part of team at Newmedica’s new Leicester eye clinic and surgical centre
NEWMEDICA has officially opened a multimillion-pound eye clinic and surgical centre in Leicester – and optometrists are a key part of the team.
Newmedica Leicester is focused on supporting the NHS to help drive down waiting times by caring for patients with a range of eye conditions, including cataract surgery and YAG laser treatment. The centre’s 22-strong team, which includes optometrists, also works with community optometrists to deliver patient choice and care.
Among guests attending the official opening ceremony on 12 March was Dr Angela Lennox CBE DL, GP and representing the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire. ‘As a GP, I’m so grateful that Newmedica is increasing access to care for people in our communities,’ she said.
‘It is clear that delivering high standards of personalised care to patients is of key importance to Newmedica, and I’ve seen that you also provide them with the best lenses.’
Newmedica Leicester is owned and led by four consultant ophthalmologists, Rishika Chaudhary, Rupal Morjaria, Li Jiang and Ricardo De Sousa Peixoto, alongside operations director Megan da Silva.
Mr Ricardo De Sousa Peixoto, consultant and clinical lead for the clinic, said: ‘In addition to the patients we see, we are enjoying working with all the local optometrists and other partners, ensuring that our joined-up working across the system provides patients with the treatment they need and deserve in a timely manner.
‘We choose to use the highest quality monofocal cataract replacement lenses for our NHS patients, reducing the likelihood of patients needing corrective treatment in the future. This reduces costs for the NHS, allowing them to support other pressures and, most importantly, it means fewer patients going through the worry of avoidable treatment.
‘This high standard of care and rapid access to treatment means that Leicester patients can get back to leading their normal, healthy lives quickly and comfortably.’
In due course, Newmedica Leicester will also offer its expertise and facilities to help train new NHS surgeons, ensuring the continuation of high-quality care across the region.
