NHS proposes tariff reductions paid for cataract schemes
The NHS is considering reducing the tariffs (prices) for certain cataract procedures, specifically those under codes BZ31*, BZ32*, and BZ34*, as part of the 2025/26 NHS Payment Scheme (NHSPS) according to NHS England.
The aim is to re-direct the funding towards other ophthalmology services where there is a need for increased activity and to ensure a broader range of clinically necessary ophthalmology services are delivered.
The money saved from the price reduction will be used to increase prices for other ophthalmology activities, with a proposed 15% increase across the board for other ophthalmology services.

Support for Other Ophthalmology Services:The aim is to encourage the delivery of a wider variety of clinically necessary ophthalmology services, ensuring patients receive timely treatment for different conditions says NHS England.
-
Equalization of Prices for Complex Cataracts:NHS England is also proposing to set the same prices for complex cataracts with and without complications (BZ31A and BZ31B), as there was found to be little difference in the reported costs based on 2023/24 data.

Private Sector Impact:A proposed cut in prices is expected to result in significant losses for some private hospitals, potentially exceeding £60 million reports HSJ.
