Care leavers to get free sight tests

Government introduces NHS benefits for children leaving care that include prescriptions, dental services and eye checks

The government has introduced a package of measures for young people leaving care. They will get free eye care, prescriptions and dental services up to their 25th birthday, as well as enhanced job opportunities in the NHS.

The government said it was responding to a lack of support for young care leavers that left them “isolated, separated from their families or siblings, and struggling to get going as young adults”.

Those who have been in care are at a higher risk of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and PTSD, and have a higher chance of experiencing homelessness and unemployment.

Wes Streeting, the health secretary, said: “Those in care face the toughest start in life and as a result suffer from a barrage of health inequalities, hampering their chances of going on to lead a happy, successful and fulfilling life.

“I am determined to give all children the best start in life, and this boost to healthcare and career opportunities for care leavers is a concrete step towards that goal.”

The measures, which the government introduced last month, will also provide new safeguards that alert GPs if their patients are in care, giving them a better picture of who they are treating. It also aims to give care leavers easier access to mental health services in the community.
