College welcomes further government research into the causes of headlight glare 

The College of Optometrists welcomes the UK government’s decision to address headlight glare with further research to identify what vehicle design factors may be responsible for increased headlight glare as part of its road safety strategy, published on 7 January 2026. This step recognises it’s an increasingly serious issue for drivers across the UK.

The announcement follows a joint campaign by The College of Optometrists, the RAC and Baroness Hayter, which called for the causes of headlight glare to be properly investigated and addressed. The inclusion of this issue is a significant and positive step, particularly in response to the growing number of drivers reporting problems with dazzling headlights, which can compromise visual comfort, confidence and safety on the road.

Dr Paramdeep Bilkhu, clinical advisor at The College of Optometrists, said, “Optometrists are hearing first-hand from patients who are struggling with glare, especially at night, and who are concerned about the impact on their ability to drive safely. While modern vehicle lighting offers many benefits, it is essential that its design, alignment and regulation do not inadvertently put road users at risk.

We look forward to working with government, industry and road safety partners to ensure that the investigation leads to evidence-based solutions that protect drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike, and help make UK roads safer for everyone.”
