OPTEGRA opts for best lenses for all NHS cataract patients

As Optegra Eye Health Care continues to grow its business to serve NHS cataract patients, it is also investing in the latest technology and the most advanced lenses.

Consultant ophthalmic surgeons throughout the hospital group – now with 25 hospitals, clinics and diagnostic clinics in the UK – are all committed to using Johnson & Johnson TECNISÒ lenses, having appreciated the improved visual outcomes they offer.

Mr Javad Moayedi, Optegra NHS Lead Consultant, said: “There are a number of advantages to these monofocal lenses, not least that they deliver sharp, high-quality vision.  They are also engineered to provide high contrast vision from day to night, allowing clarity of vision even in low-lighting.

“This is a monofocal IOL which allows excellent focus on objects in the distance, so is perfect to assist with driving and long-distance vision. And there is no association with ‘glistenings’ which can be an issue with other lenses, as they cause light scatter which inhibits the patient’s vision.

“As surgeons we are also impressed with the longer-term benefit that these lenses repel fluid. So, while other lenses can attract aqueous fluid which increases the risk of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) which requires a second procedure to clear the resulting opaqueness, the TECNIS lenses are proven to reduce the risk of PCO.

“Optegra’s ethos is to provide the very best service to our patients, from patient liaison to the physical environment and of course, clinical outcomes. By using these TECNIS lenses, which are considered superior to those used by other hospital groups, we are confident that we can offer every single NHS patient a lens which will continue to achieve the excellent outcomes we are known for.”

Optegra offers NHS cataract surgery from all but two of its UK hospitals and has excellent outcomes.

Amongst Optegra NHS patients, 70 per cent had best corrected binocular distance visual acuities (BCDVA) of 6/5 or better; and 96 per cent had BCDVA of 6/6 or better  – equivalent to driving standard.
