Pearse Keane to lecture on AI at 100%

Transforming Eyecare with Artificial Intelligence at 100% Optical

One of the most internationally respected leaders in the use of AI in ophthalmology, Pearse Keane, will be speaking on the OSA stand at 100% Optical on Sunday 26 February at 1.45pm.

His lecture – “Transforming Eyecare with Artificial Intelligence” – is likely to be of great interest to clinicians, as OSA Chair Roy Stoner explained –

“Since we launched the OSA E-Health Focus Group last year we have made intensive efforts to ensure that UK optics leads in this field, and Pearse Keane’s presentation will be enlightening for our collective aspirations for optometry.  We are grateful to Pearse for accepting the invitation to be our keynote speaker on the OSA stand,” he said.

Pearse Keane, Professor of Artificial Medical Intelligence at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, outlined his presentation –

“Ophthalmology is among the most technology-driven of all medical specialties, with treatments utilizing high-spec medical lasers and advanced microsurgical techniques, and diagnostics involving ultra-high resolution imaging. It is at the forefront of trailblazing research areas in healthcare, such as stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and most recently artificial intelligence,” he said.

Moorfields’ collaboration with the world’s leading artificial intelligence company, DeepMind, has now been running for several years. It involves the sharing of >1,000,000 anonymised retinal scans to allow for the automated diagnosis of diseases such as AMD and diabetic retinopathy.

“In my presentation, I will describe the motivation – and urgent need – to apply deep learning to ophthalmology, the processes required to establish a research collaboration between the NHS and a company like DeepMind, initial results of our research and why I believe that ophthalmology could be the first branch of medicine to be fundamentally reinvented through the application of artificial intelligence,” said Pearse.

In October 2019, Pearse was included in the Evening Standard Progress1000 list of most influential Londoners (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/the1000) and in June 2020, he was profiled in The Economist (https://www.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2020/06/11/the-potential-and-the-pitfalls-of-medical-ai).

In 2022, he was listed in the “Top 10” of the “The Power List” by The Ophthalmologist magazine, a ranking of the Top 100 most influential people in the world of ophthalmology
