OPTEGRA new quality report celebrates outcomes, training and AI while calling on progress needed with NHS partners
Optegra Eye Health Care has this week launched its latest NHS Quality Report. While capturing excellent results across 2025-26 compared to industry standards, the report also calls for a stronger working relationship with the NHS.
Optegra’s report states it has delivered NHS treatments for cataract (including YAG), glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with excellent outcomes. For example, amongst cataract patients, 99.2% had no recorded operative complications (vs. NOD benchmark 98.4%).
This has been enhanced by the innovative drop-free cataract surgery which Optegra now offers all suitable NHS patients; over 17,000 individuals no longer needed to apply three-four drops per eye, for three-four weeks after surgery. In fact, they did not need to apply any drops at all.
The report – found here – also celebrates the great advances in training amongst NHS colleagues in the community – reaching almost 6,000 optometrists this year through face-to-face events, webinars and corporate CPD days.
And the advances in digital transitions are recorded, as Optegra develops its AI function, Iris, to improve accessibility and save clinicians’ time for those patients who need it most. In fact, almost 200,000 patients have now been assisted in this way.
However, the changes in NHS regulations have caused a challenge. Dr Peter Byloos, CEO of Optegra, states in his welcome:
“The past year has been one of great challenge as NHS regulations have changed, enforcing minimum waiting times – despite us having theatres and clinicians available immediately – and also limiting the number of patients the independent sector can treat.
“In response we have launched a new Right to Sight initiative in a number of our hospitals to help patients who wish to proceed to essential treatment more quickly at a minimal cost. And all our cataract patients have the advantage of innovative drop-free surgery with superior lenses.
“We are open to working closely with all the Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and are eager to continue to support patients to improve their vision and therefore their quality of life.”
