Essilor® has hosted a ‘Class of Myopia’ event for families, taking them on a space adventure in a quest to learn about the importance of clear vision, and fight the myopia epidemic in a fun and interactive way.

Amisha Pau, optometrist and Medical Science Liaison Lead at EssilorLuxottica with children

The event, which took place on the 29 November at its Kensington showroom in London, was delivered using EyestarTM Mission, a new classroom-based awareness programme created by Essilor®, where children follow the adventures of space characters Charlie, Skyler and Eyo and earn badges along the way.

Mumsnet.com, the UK’s “biggest website for parents”, provided support and awareness of the event, and during November, Essilor® hosted an ‘ask the expert’ Q&A on the platform to give its community of parents the chance to ask questions on the topic of myopia and eye health.

This follows a recent Ipsos survey commissioned by Essilor® amongst 1,000 UK parents revealing a serious lack of understanding around myopia in children. Indeed, 94% of parents of myopic children wrongly believe that wearing glasses will solve the problem.

Gizem Topdagi, Stellest Junior Product & Category Manager at EssilorLuxottica ran the session with Amisha Pau, an optometrist and Medical Science Liaison Lead at EssilorLuxottica.

Gizem Topdagi said: “It’s evident from our recent survey that there is room for improvement in parents’ knowledge around myopia and running events like the ‘Class of Myopia’ using the EyestarTM Mission programme helps empower children and parents to take ownership of their eye health.

“The session combined short videos, activities and key learnings for a comprehensive and memorable experience. It also covered some useful take home lifestyle advice to help slow down the onset and progression of myopia, as well as raising awareness of myopia control optical solutions such as Essilor® Stellest® lenses.”

The EyestarTM Mission educational programme has been successfully delivered in a number of countries, receiving positive feedback from participants.  ECPs can find out more about EyestarTM Mission and how they can deliver the programme in practice or at a local school, by speaking to their Essilor® business development manager.

Lauren Vanderplank who attended the event with her nine-year-old son, said: “We really enjoyed attending Essilor’s ‘Class of Myopia’ event. The optical experts made the Eyestar Mission programme engaging and interactive, leaving my son feeling confident and more informed about managing his short-sightedness and the benefits of Stellest® lenses. I certainly learnt a few things, too! It’s fantastic to see Essilor raising awareness of myopia, how to combat it, and empowering parents with the knowledge to spot the early signs – something I wish I’d known sooner as a mum.”

About Essilor® Stellest®
Essilor® Stellest® lenses are Essilor®’s best solution for fighting myopia in children because they have two functions. First, they correct myopia, giving the wearer sharp vision. And second, they slow down its progression by positioning a volume of non-focused light in front of the retina, following the retina’s shape which sends a signal to slow down eye elongation.

Essilor® Stellest® lenses slow down myopia progression by 67% on average when worn for at least 12 hours a day, every day*2.
