David Reed MP met with clinical teams in Exeter who are supporting NHS ophthalmology services in expanding access to vital cataract operations
MP for Exmouth and Exeter East visited SpaMedica Exeter to discuss how independent sector capacity is supporting NHS ophthalmology services across the country.
Spamaedica’s efficient model integrates advanced technology and clinical expertise to deliver high-quality outcomes and best in class patient satisfaction, whilst also playing a vital role in advancing the Government’s mission to cut waiting times and improve access to care – unlocking capacity and generating long-term value for the NHS.
During the visit, Reed toured the hospital’s clinical facilities and met colleagues delivering care to local residents, learning how streamlined pathways and community-based services enable more patients to be treated quickly and safely, while reducing pressure on acute hospitals.
Supporting NHS waiting list recovery in Exeter
SpaMedica Exeter in 2025 treated 1,800 patients. The state-of the-art hospital employs a dedicated local team, contributing to local employment and community health infrastructure.
Expanding ophthalmology capacity
During discussions, SpaMedica highlighted the opportunity to expand local NHS capacity through independent sector resources, including rapidly deployable ophthalmology services that can support local Trusts, protect elective recovery and maintain high standards of care.
Such models can provide additional resilience to the system while helping the NHS reduce inefficiencies and continue tackling waiting times.
